Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

Home > New York > Festivals
It's a little bit of Hong Kong in New York City.

On August 7 and 8, the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival returns to Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, a two-day celebration of Chinese culture.

Specifically, the festival celebrates the fifth moon (or the fifth month) of the lunar calendar, and, as the name implies, the main draw is color Asian dragon boat race on the lake, as over 120 teams paddle to the beat of drums in this 2,000 year-old tradition.

Onshore, traditional Chinese foods and performances delight, including from progressive rockers The HSU-NAMI band, which integrates an amplified "erhu" a two-string spike fiddle used in Chinese classical and folk music; martial arts demonstrations; and Chinese folk dances. Check out the full schedule here.

With so much to see and do, you'll need two days to fit in all in.
