Anyone for some homemade jam?
Do you remember the days when housewives bottled their own jams and preserves from the excess produce in their home gardens? Perhaps you can recall your mother, grandmother or auntie doing so, or heard family or friends mention the practice while reminiscing upon 'the good old days'. Unfortunately, in today's fast-paced society this gentle art has pretty much fallen by the wayside, and as a result the preserves which we ingest are generally mass-produced in factories and imported from the other side of the world.

However, if like me you have a leaning towards nostalgia or simply like supporting small local businesses, then you'll be delighted to discover that, like a 'blast from the past', a little shop in Morley's Coventry Markets is purveying yummy homemade jams, chutneys, sauces and other preserves.

With its shelves filled with a bewildering assortment of simply-labelled but yummy goodies, Homemade Temptations is a small unassuming shop which conjures up images of CWA headquarters, country shows and market stalls. A family business, it's owned, managed and staffed by a lovely husband, wife and daughter team. When I discovered it, I was completely over the moon. Although I've always loved homemade preserves and have even tried my hand at making some myself, when time has allowed, in over twenty years of living in Perth I've never found a single place which sells them, apart from outrageously priced gourmet delis and the odd school or church fete. Perhaps they do exist, but I've never been able to find one.

Homemade Temptations sells a wonderful and diverse variety of preserves, many of which are delightfully old-fashioned recipes which you simply can't get in the supermarket or even in more specialised delicatessens. Some use seasonal ingredients and are therefore only available for part of the year, while stocks last, and others use old-fashioned fruits and vegetables which are no longer easily available. During my most recent visit, I purchased some wonderfully creative jams which included tomato and passionfruit, tomato and ginger, and mulberry and ginger.

The assortment of traditional marmalades was simply staggering too, with imperial mandarin, grapefruit and ginger, tangelo, French, and lemon and lime varieties sharing the shelf with more common types such as Seville orange, lemon and three fruit, a combination of orange lemon and grapefruit. Other rare treats were the deliciously 'Olde World' selections of butters including passionfruit, banana and mango/lime, along with the popular lemon butter.

For those who tastes are more inclined to savouries, the shop also sells bottles of homemade tomato and plum sauces, pickles, relishes and a terrific selection of delicious chutneys, both mild and extra hot. The selection of chutneys included pear and walnut, paw paw and chilli, rhubarb and orange, and apricot. Of course, these are just a few of many. To check out the full range, you'll really need to make a special visit to the Coventry Markets and have a look, yourself.
