For years now the RNA Showgrounds have been bringing you varied shows and exhibits: music festivals, home related shows, quilting, woodworking, camping, New Year's Eve parties and their premier event - the Ekka.

A different type of show will present on the grounds this year, one that has a little different slant to it. It is called Homeless Connect and as the name implies, the intent is to help the homeless in helping themselves connect to beneficially vital services.

Homeless Connect is an initiative brought to us by the Council of Capital Citys Lord Mayors. Their aim is to help the homeless. It began in Brisbane in November 2006 and has since been adopted by numerous cities around Australia including Perth, Hobart and Adelaide.

According to the website the events are held to provide a meal, medical and dental care, haircuts, hygienic services and much more. Information is available as well to help connect people with services dealing with housing, employment, government assistance and legal services.

This year the event will be held on Wednesday, May 29 from 8:30am - 2:00pm, with breakfast at 7:00am. Look for buildings 9 and 10, The Avenues at Expo Place.

The information on the website is limited. You can however find out about donating, volunteering or if your school is interested in helping. They can be found here www.homelessconnect.com.au . Information about this year's event can be found at www.rnashowgrounds.com.au and click on "What's On".

Though it is too late this year to volunteer at the showgrounds, you can call them and find out more about what they do and their volunteer program. Donations are welcome as they are funded by the private sector, corporate and government assisted.

Do you know someone who is homeless or may be in the throes? This may be the information they need to help get them off or to keep them off the streets. With winter coming and it getting colder just maybe we can help a few people in this way.
