Home Is Where The Heartaches Fun Run

Home > Melbourne > Charity
New local charity Home is Where the Heartaches (HIWTH), proudly presents their first official event 'Home is Where the Heartaches Fun Run' on Sunday the 12th of June in Mornington, Victoria. The public fitness event is open to everyone, and aims to raise money and awareness for the treatment and education of Depression.

It is not uncommon to hear people complaining of the 'winter blues' or 'post holiday blues.' However, for many people, having the 'blues' or feeling down, is far more complicated than simply yearning for some sunshine.

I am talking about Depression, one of the most common and most serious mental health problems in the world. By the year 2020 is predicted to be the second leading cause of mortality in Australia, behind Heart Disease. According to Beyond Blue, one in five people will experience Depression in some form during their lives.

Although the exact definition of the illness is yet to be agreed upon, it generally involves severe and prolonged feelings of hopelessness, inadequacy, anxiety and despondency. Such feelings often become persistent and recurrent, leading to the inability and reluctance for sufferers to complete simple daily tasks or participate in activities, which were once enjoyable. Sadly, depression is one of the primary risk factors associated with suicide. So you can see just how important it is to encourage people to become involved in campaigns that assist in raising awareness of this debilitating disease.

It is comforting to know that there are people within our local community who are striving to make a difference, and have their voices heard when it comes to raising community awareness for Depression. The reality is, most cases of Depression go unnoticed and/or untreated, with statistics indicating it is on the rise in Australian adolescents.

Consequently, Home is Where the Heartaches, a new Melbourne based organisation, was founded in order to raise awareness through education and the spreading of positive messages to the younger generation. The organisation operates as a sole trader, and is dedicated to working with local communities to drastically reduce the number of cases of Depression that remain untreated.

Home is Where the Heartaches is holding its first major fundraising event in early June this year. The event is a 'Fun Run,' which will be held at Padua College in Mornington, (located on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria) on Sunday the 12th of June 2011. There are two scheduled events. The first is for participants under 16 years of age, and the second is an open event for participants of any age.

The entry fee for the run is in the form of a donation; $10 for the open event and $5 for the under 16 event. There are also plenty of prizes up for grabs on the day (donated by local businesses) and all proceeds will be used to assist with the start up of the
Home is Where the Heartaches charity.

Everyone is welcome, however if participants are under 18 years of age, a liability/ permission form will need to be completed by a parent or legal guardian. If parents are unavailable to sign participation forms on the day, please email Emma at, prior to the event to obtain a copy of the form.

Registration for the under 16 event starts at 10am; the 'Fun Run' commencing at 10.30am. Registration for the open event starts at 10.30am; the 'Fun Run' commencing at 11am.

If you are in the area, why not get your blood pumping on a chilly Melbourne morning, all the while helping raise much needed funds for a worthy cause. We hope to see you there.
