Have you noticed that some of the best coffee in Brisbane is not from cafes or restaurants, but from tiny hole in the wall spots. I have two favourite hole in the wall spots in and around Auchenflower.

First is Ugly Mug On the corner of Ridley street and Milton Road, Auchenflower. It's close to the Wesley Hospital, the Milton Road shops and is very handy on your way to work. It's run by an American guy called Mike, who is known throughout Auchenflower. The name of the shop is not only a clever play on words and self deprecating joke about coffee and the owner it also refers to the (growing) collection of coffee mugs on a shelf inside. The one that always catches my eye is the Star Wars stormtrooper mug, but there are many others.

Not only does the cafe pass the interesting test it also has excellent coffee at good prices plus an array of quiche, biscuits, croissants and other treats that vary day to day. If you are served by Mike, you also get interesting conversation, but no matter who serves you it will be great and friendly service. That is why the Ugly Mug has a loyal following of coffee fans and you will often find a small group of people making their orders and chatting away like they are visiting an old friend. You can grab a coffee to go or sit on the small balcony out the back and relax while you enjoy your brew.

Second is [bunker] in Railway Terrace, Milton. Named after the WWII air raid shelter that it operates out of, this is a very popular local coffee spot. The shelter is one of hundreds built in Brisbane to shelter the locals after the bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941 made the threat of air raids very real. Now the shelter hosts the hub of the cafe and a few small stools. There is a bench seat and stools out on the footpath which make a surprisingly nice place to sit and watch the world go by. Be warned though this is a seriously popular place for coffee at morning tea time so expect a crowd. It is deservingly popular as the coffee is really good.
