When I first heard about from a friend, I told her that the restaurant had a weird name. Who would want to come out from an evening date with a potential partner with breath smelling like a pig? The name sure got my attention, though and it as it appears, most of Australia too, as it has been an Aussie success story since 1989.

Now, the franchises have grown all across Australia; all 75 of them. I tried the Hog's Breath franchise at Caloundra and at Redcliffe and they both had the Hog's Breath hospitality with great level of service. A number of Hog's Breath franchises are positioned in idyllic locations just across from the sea, so diners can enjoy the food whilst smelling the salty air and experiencing the sea breeze whipping across their faces. Probably a reason for this is because its first store was opened by Don Algie in 1989 in a similarly scenic location at the doorsteps of Whitsunday Island, Airlie Beach.

Famous for their Prime Rib steaks, Hog's Breath complements their signature mouth-watering steaks with a diverse menu, featuring chicken, seafood and salads. The atmosphere is fun and light, with saloon style tables and chairs with unique paraphernalia adorning the walls.

On our lunch-time visit, we were hungry and we ordered the garlic & herb bread to start off with as we stared out into the ocean. Our waitress was friendly and efficient, introducing herself by her name and letting us know what the specials are, reminiscent of a five-star restaurant and not a quick lunch café stop. Emma ensured great customer service while we pondered over the menu.

Hog's Breath had $9.95 lunch time specials with a variety of choices to choose from, including a grilled chicken and ranch burger with curly hog tail fries, char-grilled chicken breast, lettuce, beetroot, tomato, red onion and ranch dressing (which was what I ordered), chicken caesar wrap which had char-grilled chicken with cos lettuce, crispy bacon, croutons, parmesan cheese and Caesar dressing wrapped in a grilled tortilla with curly hog tail fries, Cajun beef and ranch salad with BBQ rib fillet strips, dusted with mild blackened seasoning, serviced on top of a healthy mix of lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, cherry tomatoes, ranch dressing and cucumber yoghurt dip to name a few.

My grilled chicken and ranch burger was definitely filling and the curly hog tail fries were addictive. The generous size of the $9.95 portion almost made me regret ordering a calamari side. But only almost. This was because the calamari was juicy and tender with a delicious mix of seasoning.

The Hog's Breath menu promised top value and great taste, and they did deliver.

One of my dining partners ordered a lemon myrtle salmon ($26.50), which was pan-fried salmon sprinkled with lemon myrtle, coconut & chilli rub, served with mashed potato in a Wild Lime sauce. I thought it sounded incredibly exotic and when the dish came, it did look very good. He had a choice of how the salmon was cooked and the medium turned out just perfect.

Other options on the menu include Belissimo pasta, delicious decadent desserts, the hot seafood tower for two ($64 for two towers of lemon myrtle salmon, 2 fillets of tempura battered barramundi, 2 prawn twisters, 4 garlic prawns,12 calamari rings, Hog Tail Fries, house salad, lemon wedges, plus 2 dressings.

Hogs Breath options in Brisbane include Indooroopilly, Aspley, Ipswich, Garden City, Brisbane CBD, Morayfield, Victoria Point, Logan, Redcliffe and Cleveland. With these many options, stop by and enjoy a good feed, guaranteeing that you will leave the venue with a full stomach and hog's breath.
