It was probably ironic that we fronted up to the for one of our Mums-Only catch-ups, because directly opposite the cafe was a large, fenced and funky looking playground. Perfect for a mob of littlies to run amok while we leisurely sipped our coffees.

The Hobart Street Deli, on a quiet street in North Perth, is one of those places you hear about through word of mouth. It is relatively small, and the fabulous park opposite makes it a magnet for young families.

The Deli is open daily for breakfast and lunch, and it was fantastic to see the breakfast menu full of interesting and different alternatives to the standard eggs and bacon. There are offerings such as haloumi and potato cakes with beetroot relish, breakfast wraps (eggs, bacon, tomatoes, pecorino and greens) and homemade cornbread with smoked salmon and asparagus.

The counter is also crammed with an array of muffins and slices. There's no point trying to watch your weight here.

The rain did little to dampen the enthusiasm of our waiter, a friendly fellow with an excess of personality. Despite it being full to capacity, there was a relaxed feel, although that could have just been the fact we had left our children at home for the morning. It is popular with the locals, especially those with dogs, but probably worth making a detour for if you have small children with energy to burn.
