Hit Girl #1 - Book Review

Dave Lizewski, AKA Kick-Ass, has retired from the superhero business, but Hit Girl is not ready to do the same, so she tries to recruit a new side kick. As luck would have it, she is invited to Columbia by a new employer just as famous hit man Fabio "Mano" Mendoza is being transported to jail. If Hit Girl can persuade Mano to join her (and she can be very persuasive when she has a mind to be), she might have some company on her quest to "serve justice to the world".

Hit Girl is a spin-off from the Kick-Ass series and takes place between the events of Kick-Ass volumes one and two. It is written by Mark Millar, who worked on Kick-Ass and Wolverine: Old Man Logan, and illustrated by John Romita Jr (Kick-Ass: The Dave Lizewski Years and Daredevil Collection: Ground Zero%%). I'm not a huge fan of the art, which has a bit of a manga influence, but the story is promising, though not much actually happens in the first issue.

Like Kick-Ass, Hit Girl is not a comic for children. There is violence, gore and coarse language all over the place. It's not badly written, but it failed to really grab my attention with this first issue. It will probably appeal mainly to big fans of the Kick-Ass comics and movies.
