Food and eating is an integral part of any culture or society, and it is definitely an important part of my life. It is so much more than just a necessity to survive, it is a passion and a love for many of us. The theme of this year's History Week should appeal to all budding Masterchefs out there "EAT History" - Edible, Appetising and Tasty. This oh so tasty theme gives us an opportunity to look at the different ways food has made an important impact on the lives of people from the ancient Greeks to modern times.
There is so much on for History Week across NSW you are bound to find an activity that will appeal to your tastes. You can sit down and enjoy a high tea whilst you learn about the history of china and lace, or "enjoy" some traditional convict fare or hospital food.
For a day trip you can visit the Hunter Valley to learn more about the history of wine production. If these don't quite suit your tastes there will be numerous photographic exhibitions showcasing things from historical food packaging to cafes on Sydney streets, food markets and decadent balls. You can also learn more about food and crime including the last meals of famous criminals or the use of poison in tasty desserts.
For a more active/calorie burning approach to History Week you can take one of the many walking tours around Sydney and Leichhardt looking into the history of food and the influences of immigrant cultures on the food in an area. Or you can take a bush walk to learn more about bush tucker and Aboriginal food. EAT History Week offers everyone a chance to get involved and learn about something that has been a passion and fascination for so many people over time.
EAT runs from Saturday 3rd September to Sunday 11th September. See the official EAT History Week
website for more information on what events are on, when they occur, where they are, what the cost is and whether you have to prebook.
