Every winter and spring there are eerie historical lantern tours of the Royal Melbourne Hospital at the Royal Park Campus. The origins of this hospital can be traced back to the gold rush of the early 1850s.
The tours are run by history buff and story-teller Jeff Whittington who is pictured above decked out in his frock coat, vest and top hat. Jeff worked for the hospital for over thirty years.
He shares wonderful stories of ghosts, graves and secret tunnels..
You may even see the ''the grey nurse'' who wears a long dress and haunts lonely night shift staff, although she is credited with many good deeds.
Learn how the hospital evolved from a 10-bed cottage at the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale streets in 1848 to today's sprawling Parkville institution.
It is amazing how much of Melbourne's history is tied up with the history of this venerable institution.
Some of the tour is outside so bring a coat.
Tours run from 7pm - 9pm. Don't be late, as Jeff pulls out his fob watch and these tours leave on time.
These tours are not cancelled due to rain. A bit of rain and standing around under your umbrellas simply adds to the atmosphere.
Tours are free but a donation would be welcome, with all proceeds going towards the campus.
