Stay at Historic Taabinga Homestead

Several years ago I had an enjoyable weekend at this historic place just 18 kms from Kingaroy , and I recently returned to reminisce.



The homestead was built in 1846, and the property at that time covered some 305 square miles. Charles Robert Haly and his brother W. O'Grady Haley were the first white men to discover and explore the area now know as Taabinga, according to their brochure. It goes on to say that in 1859, Charles Haley became the sole owner of the property. In 1860 he became the first member of parliament for the district of Burnett (Gayndah).



There's certainly a lot to learn, about the interesting history of the property in various history books, online and in the Taabinga brochure and at the Homestead.

Cattle were bred at Taabinga from the 1870's, and around 1887, the station had 7000 head of cattle and 120 horses.

Another feature of Taabinga is the gardens. In 1932, it was described as "the most glorious gardens that one could wish to see". It is still a wonderful garden.

Today it offers heritage accommodation in the Store or the Singlemen's Quarters cottages and is a venue for weddings and functions. As well they welcome tour groups and other visits.

Not only is there the Homestead to see, but outbuildings including a blacksmith's shop, and creamery. We stayed in the Singlemen's Quarters, overlooking the splendid garden.
