Expect some history, great views and quality food
The Como hotel is an essential place to visit if you find yourself in the quiet suburb of Como, located in the Sutherland Shire. Como is home to beautiful parks, fields and waters. It's a wonderful place to take a stroll on a weekend or a day off, and the best place to stop for lunch is the restaurant inside The Como Hotel.

The Como Hotel

For those who are unfamiliar with the hotel or the area, the building has an interesting history. The Como Hotel is actually one of the oldest buildings in the Sutherland Shire; Though it wasn't always a hotel - and it has been re-built. The hotel was originally a German club while the railway lines were being constructed, and the building itself was constructed in 1878, though it wasn't licensed until 1890. Unfortunately, the hotel burned down in November 1996 - but amazingly, it was re-built 5 years later, keeping the original brickwork and salvaging one burnt door in the restaurant. Thanks to the dedicated people who keep the place running today, this popular hotel is now stronger than ever.

When you visit on any given weekend, the hotel will likely be packed with families, couples and singles enjoying lunches and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere of the area. One of the greatest things about the restaurant is the generous amount of seating, both inside and outside. On sunny days, the outdoor seats catch a lot of sun - but when the sun isn't shining, the indoor seating is just as comfortable as the outside seats, without the unpredictable weather elements. Families with young children will be pleased to hear that there is a children's play area located in the outdoor section of the restaurant - so the kids can play while you relax nearby. What more could you ask for?

The other best thing about the restaurant is, of course, the food. Think classic pub fare meets modern Australian cuisine. I would recommend ordering off the specials board behind the main counter where you place your order. Pictured below are two popular dishes available in the restaurant:
The salt and pepper squid and the pie of the day.
The food is good quality and the servings are large, so make sure you come with a healthy appetite.

If pub food isn't your thing, you can still visit to spend time in the bar section of the hotel and enjoy the good views, fresh air and friendly service. The Como Hotel has a number of special deals and events on through the week. If you're interested, you can see what's currently happening by visiting the 'what's on' page on their website, linked here.
