A Brisbane-based mum and writer, I love nothing more than a day out with family and friends.

The Hire Engine

With their genuine ex-service fire engine, complete with working fire hose and pumping sound system, the Hire Engine and its crew are the perfect kids party (or adults party) entertainment.

We caught up with them recently at the Fairfield Library, where they put on a special show for the children. Instead of the usual story-time, on this day the kids were treated to a visit from the Hire Engine. They were lucky enough to get up close and personal with the truck (both inside and out) and dance along to some rocking tunes, courtesy of the Hire Engine crew.

The highlight of the visit was without doubt the fire hose display. Each child waited patiently for their turn at spraying one of the poor crew members with the fire hose. As it was a hot and sticky day, some of the more adventurous kids decided to jump under the water too.

A great day was had by all the kids, and there were many long faces as the Hire Engine pulled out of the car park. The Hire Engine website says that aside from children's parties, it is available for formals, hens/bucks and special events.

It was a free visit for the library kids this time, but the cost for a child's party is not exactly cheap. It would be an absolute hit with kids and parents alike though, so perhaps teaming up with another family for a combined birthday party celebration, where the cost is shared may make this awesome show more affordable for the average family.
