Hip Hop music is synonymous with the USA, so what better way to celebrate the fourth of July than to attend a Hip Hop Open Mic Competition at Redcliffe's Captain Cook Tavern? Performers will be battling skills and wits from 9pm 'til late, for the chance to win great prizes, including a Shure Dual wireless microphone set.

Hip Hop music (also known as rap music) first began in the 1970s in New York City. It was these early days at block parties predominantly attended by African American youths that saw DJs begin mixing beats on two turntables. As the mixing and sampling, use of drum machines and synthesisers further developed the genre, so too did vocalists begin rapping – speaking lyrical content to the beat.

There's a great deal of skill involved in coming up with a good rhyme and rhythm before a performer even tries to tackle the verbal gymnastics required to rap. Lyrics are often created in a way that almost feels like a tongue twister to the inexperienced rapper.

Over forty years later and hip hop has well and truly evolved from an underground movement to part of the mainstream. MC's freestyling (making it up on the spot) skills are lauded and even immortalised in films such as 8M Mile. Even MCs who rely on scripted rhymes gain the respect and applause of the crowd. Sometimes offensive, sometimes boldly honest, other times cheeky and humorous, these modern day poets comment on and hold a mirror up to all aspects of society to really make us think.

If you think you'd rather try your skills on the mic instead of just watching other MCs go for it. Uou can send an email to contact@acedeejays.com.au or contact them via their Facebook page. The organisers will be running a recording system on the night so you can take your performance home with you. Your recordings will be yours alone, meaning that you maintain the rights to all aspects of the content. The competition is open format so anyone can enter.
