The is celebrating its 10th birthday in 2016, and over that time it has become one of the most popular events on the Mornington Peninsula. The scarecrows appear during the September school holidays, giving families a great excuse to visit the always fun Mornington Peninsula, with the chance to win some great prizes.

The Scarecrow Festival has been embraced by a huge cross-section of the local community, and even people from outside the area can take part by teaming up with a host property in the hinterland. Making a scarecrow is something local groups can do together - Families, wineries, business and even artists enter, as do social groups and local schools, with a category just for children. Then the scarecrows stand proud for the enjoyment of locals and the visitors who come especially to see them.



Using a wide range of materials, the scarecrows come in all shapes and sizes, from traditional to a little bit extraordinary, to the scarecrows who are so far out of the box they must be classified as nothing short of wacky! Creativity runs wild, and anything is allowed from a competition point of view, so all of the scarecrows are truly amazing and well worth seeing.

Locals enter their scarecrows for the opportunity to win some great prizes, but even visitors can get involved. There are three ways to be part of the festival.

1. Take a selfie with your favourite scarecrow (or scarecrows), or upload a short 3-minute video on the Hinterland Scarecrow Festival Facebook Page before 29th September for your chance to win a $100 prize for a pic or $200 prize for a video.

2. The People's Choice Award is a popular prize for entrants in the competition. Drive around and see the scarecrows, then vote for your favourite either through the Scarecrow Festival Facebook Page or send an email via the website.

3.Play Spot the Scarecrow. This scarecrow based scavenger hunt begins with the question and answer list on the website. Answer all the questions then submit your entry for a chance to win one of the weekly prizes. Prizes include two BMW car hire package for the weekend valued at $1,500



The highlight of the Scarecrow Festival & Trail is the Children's Festival Day on Saturday 1st October 2016. The Festival, timed to coincide with the Red Hill Craft Market also held on Saturday 1st October, includes loads of free activities for the kids. There'll be painting, art & crafting, live music, scarecrow face painting, live scarecrow competition (with dress-ups provided) and a children's scarecrow competition.



If children would like to enter the Individual Scarecrow competition, you must register prior to 1st September using the application form on the website and the scarecrow must be delivered to the reserve by 30th September.

The Scarecrow Festival Day is being held on Saturday 1st October 2016 at the Red Hill Recreation Reserve, Arthurs Seat Road, Red Hill from 9am to 3pm.



The will be running, with scarecrows on display, from Friday 16th September to Monday 3rd October 2016. The Hinterland region includes Red Hill, Red Hill South, Arthurs Seat, Main Ridge, Balnarring, Merricks and Merricks North. The trail map can be found on the website.
