The Hillsdon Kindergarten 2017 Art Show is being held in Taringa on Saturday 14 October 2017 from 7 - 11 pm. Don't be fooled, like me, into thinking this is a children's art event! I am embarrassed to say that until recently I had seen the signs around Indooroopilly but had never been enticed to look into it. The last Kindergarten art show I had attended was a bright coloured, albeit fun, kids event full of their creations. I thought this was similar, with an open community invitation to help raise money. Why would I want to go to someone else's Kindy and see their kids art when mine is overflowing with creations (that I love but honestly don't know what to do with!)? After seeing another sign, this time wedged on a roundabout at the junction of Harts and Lambert Road, the inquisitive side of me took over and I decided to see what the fuss was about. How wrong was I!
This exhibition features 40 different local artists and showcases their vibrant works of art. All pieces will be for sale and it's your opportunity to support the Kindergarten's major annual fundraising event and local artists. It is the perfect combination of community and art!
Hillsdon Kindergarten - walk through the gates and support your community and local artists
This relaxed, cocktail style evening will include drinks, canapés and live music in the delightful Heritage listed building. It is a great opportunity to enjoy the ambience, look at the exhibition and buy a piece or two, if you are inclined. Tickets cost $60 per person and can be purchased here. This would be a great event to share with friends, why not arrange a group and check it out?
Historic Hillsdon Kindergarten will host the Art Show and Famiky Day14 - 15 October
I have since discovered that this event was founded over 50 years ago in 1963 and originally exhibited the works of ten artists, including Vida Lahey (1882-1968), a local Brisbane artist known for her modernist floral studies and love of art education. In 1923 this much-loved artist exhibited her work in all major capital cities in Australia and then participated in exhibitions in Paris, London and in the United States.
Since that time, the Art Show has transformed into an icon of the western suburbs in Brisbane, with hundreds of local painters, potters and sculptures showcasing their works. Not being a Brisbane local may have left me ignorant of this event, but I now know and appreciate how special and important this event is for local artists and for the kindergarten.
This year, the art show will showcase the works of artists including, but not limited to:
On Sunday 15 October the Kindergarten will open its doors again, but this time for the community from 9:30am - 12pm for a free Family Day. There will be a cake stall to suit every sweet tooth, on-site cafe, a raffle and activities for the kids. The tree-lined shaded back area, climbing frames, swings and sandpits will keep the kids entertained while you view the art and enjoy your morning caffeine hit at your leisure.
The Art Show and Family Day would be the perfect opportunity to reminisce if you were a past student or parent whose child attended this beautiful kindy.
If you are considering future 3-year-old or Kindergarten options for young children, you may also be able to meet existing parents, the Kindergarten's qualified teachers and have a look around the fantastic facilities. Currently, there are two rooms with a mix of flexible long and short day options designed to suit families and children's needs.
Whether you go to the Art Show and enjoy a tipple with some music, or go to the Family Day and admire the local artists work while your kids play, you are sure to have a great time. You never know, it may become your new annual event!
