Ask anyone familiar with Melbourne's inner east to describe the suburb of Glen Iris, and you would expect to hear terms like 'leafy' or 'affluent' - gnarly doesn't generally rate a mention.

Yet on a typical tree lined road, just metres from the Ashburton shopping village is a little piece of skate(board) and BMX riders' heaven, known as Hill 'n' Dale .

Hidden at the base of a lush, green valley on Summerhill Road, the skate park is flanked on one side by the unsealed Gardiners Creek trail , which connects walkers and riders with Summerhill Park to the south and Ferndale Park to the north. For skaters and BMX riders though, it's all about 'getting jumps' - in other words, some serious board and bike action.

I'm certainly no skate or BMX aficionado but according to enthusiasts, whose homemade clips and comments can be seen on YouTube and a number of popular forums, Hill 'n' Dale delivers the goods.

The park features a lengthy twin course of large and small concrete wave and 'box' style jumps coated with a rubberised surface, which have been constructed with a variety of skill levels in mind. On both sides of the course there are plenty of places to take a breather, including grassy areas (some shaded), a few bench seats and a drinking fountain.

Ready access to a service station (you never know when you're going to get a flat tyre!), shops and public transport ( bus and train ) is an added bonus, particularly for younger skaters and riders.
