Discover trails, friends and a healthier you
There's something I hear from almost every new member who joins our hiking meetup group, "But none of my friends want to go hiking with me!" It surely takes courage to step out of your 'comfort zone' to meet a bunch of strangers at a trail head. However, the hiking community around Melbourne continues to grow, catering to all ages and fitness levels.

Victoria has a variety of parks and hiking trails to explore so it is only natural that bushwalking clubs and hiking meetups have grown exponentially over the past few years. If you have always wanted to hike, there's plenty of company along the trail and before long, you have made new outdoorsy friends.

Some of our favorite hiking spots close to Melbourne are the Dandenong Ranges, Werribee Gorge State Park, Brisbane Ranges, Lerderderg State Park and Macedon Regional Park to name just a few. The list is endless. Some are easily accessible by public transport. If you don't have a car to get to other destinations, car-pooling with members of your hiking club is always an option. After all, we are also environmentally conscious. And if you want advice on hiking gear, there's plenty of help at hand from within the group.

If you are new to hiking, it is best to start off with an easy day walk. However, you do need to be prepared and check the weather conditions. If this all sounds a bit daunting for a first timer, then it's best to join one of the many hiking groups around Melbourne. When I started "Happy When I'm Hiking" in August 2013, I organized several day hikes close to Melbourne. Before long, we were hiking and camping overnight to Wilson's Prom, the Grampians and the Great Ocean Walk. Parks Victoria has streamlined the booking system so it is not too difficult to book a campsite.

There's much to do in the outdoors. Do you know that hiking is one of the best ways to get physically and mentally fit and healthy? So what are you waiting for?

Happy trails!

I'm going to workup to serious hiking. There are a few parks in my local area with 5km tracks that I can start on. I notice most hiking clubs walk for at least twice that distance.
