Season 5 of Highlander continues to build upon the mythology and characters of the show, while also introducing new elements and exploring new themes. The season features 18 episodes, and it originally aired from September 1996 to May 1997.

The departure of Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch) at the end of season 5 is a major turning point for the show, as it marks a shift in tone and direction. Richie had been a central character in the first few seasons, and his absence is felt throughout the season. However, the show is able to introduce new characters and explore new dynamics that keep the show fresh and interesting. Many avid fans to this day refuse to believe what happened to Richie (I won't give it away here) actually happened, and that moment did bring a tear to my eye.

The season starts with a two-part episode called Prophecy which sets the stage for the season's main storyline. In Prophecy, Duncan (Adrian Paul) and Methos (Peter Wingfield) discover a prophecy that tells of a lost city of immortals called Zeist. According to the prophecy, the city holds the secret to a power that could be used to rule the world, and it is up to Duncan and Methos to find the city before it falls into the wrong hands.

Throughout the season, Duncan and Methos search for clues to the location of Zeist. Along the way, they encounter a number of other immortals who are also searching for the city, including the powerful and dangerous Kalas (David Robb), who is seeking revenge against Duncan for an old grudge.

Meanwhile, Duncan also has to deal with the arrival of Cassandra (Tracy Scoggins), an old flame who is also an immortal. Cassandra has a complicated history with Duncan, and her arrival brings back painful memories for both of them. Their relationship is further complicated by the fact that she is also searching for Zeist, and is willing to do whatever it takes to find it.

In addition to the search for Zeist, season 5 also explores a number of other storylines and themes. For example, the episode Money No Object deals with the cost of violence, as Duncan must confront a man who is using his wealth to hire assassins to kill his enemies. The episode The Messenger deals with the morality of immortality, as Duncan must help an immortal who has lost his faith in humanity and is considering taking his own life.

Other episodes in the season deal with topics such as friendship, loyalty, and sacrifice. For example, the episode The End of Innocence explores the bond between Duncan and his adopted daughter, who is kidnapped by a group of criminals. Duncan is forced to make a difficult decision to save her, and the episode provides a powerful examination of the sacrifices that must be made in the name of love and loyalty.

Season 5 also explores a number of complex themes and issues, including the morality of immortality, the cost of violence, and the importance of friendship and loyalty. The show is not afraid to tackle difficult subject matter, and it handles these themes with sensitivity and nuance.

The action sequences in season 5 are as impressive as ever, with stylish choreography and thrilling fight scenes. The drama is intense and gripping, and the show continues to be a masterclass in combining action, drama, and mythology.

Overall, season 5 of Highlander is a strong and memorable season that features some significant changes and memorable moments. The introduction of new characters like Cassandra helps to keep the show fresh and interesting, while the addition of new villains like Kalas raises the stakes and provides some of the most exciting moments of the season. The show continues to explore complex themes and ideas, and it remains a must-watch for fans of the series.
