Did you know that there used to be an aqueduct in the northeast of Adelaide? I surely did not until recently.

Back in 1870, work began on the construction of an aqueduct to supply water to Hope Valley Reservoir from the River Torrens. The aqueduct included an open channel, above-ground pipe and two tunnels totalling approximately five kilometres in length. Water flowed until 2008 when the aqueduct was decommissioned and replaced with underground pipes along Linear Park.

Consequently, a 50-hectare linear reserve was left behind. This reserve, now known as , has been developed into a park for community recreation. Its landscape is being restored with local flora species to create habitat for native wildlife. Revegetation efforts are ongoing.

Gravel trails have been built to accommodate both walkers and cyclists. It took us about an hour to walk the 4-kilometre Aqueduct Trail. Evidence of the aqueduct channel, as well as two historic drains with their original brickwork, can be seen along the way. We also passed native grasses, wattles, sheoaks, blue gums and pines.

The reserve is located in the northeastern suburb of Highbury, approximately 20 minutes drive from the city. A map can be downloaded from here . There are no toilets anywhere in the reserve, so just be mindful of that when you're planning your visit.
