High Tea at the Stamford Grand

High Tea is an English tradition that brings to mind images of outward turned pinky fingers and upward turned noses. But we in Australia have something that the English do not have with their high tea and that is the sun. If you have never tried it, there is nothing more indulgent than eating scones with jam and cream in a decadent dining room and looking out into the sunshine.
The Stamford Grand at Glenelg has one of the best seats to do this from in their sun room, just off from the hotel's main dining room. If looking for a high tea experience they give you the choice of three: High Tea ($25 p/person), Deluxe High Tea ($35 p/person) or Platinum High Tea ($39 p/person). The Standard High Tea and Deluxe options are more traditional with classic jam and cream scones, petit fours and sandwiches with the crusts cut off. The Platinum High Tea on the other hand is made up of chicken and almond pate, Moroccan spiced King Prawns and Cheese and Smoked Paprika Scones with Herb Butter.
I for one would much rather a classic high tea, so went for the Deluxe option which came with the added extra of curry puffs and mini quiche. The food and tea were great, it always somehow feels so much fancier eating sandwiches with no crusts no matter what is in them. But really the best part of High Tea at the Grand is the experience. Looking out onto the jetty and the water and watching people go by as you sip your tea and eat your scones makes for a truly special occasion.
You can book to have high tea at the Grand any day of the week and go for a visit down to Glenelg or you could stay there at the hotel and make a mini getaway out of it. This is obviously something that you wouldn't do everyday but for a birthday, anniversary or special treat this is a great way to spend a Summer afternoon.
