Sometimes having your face on money just isn't enough, so now there's a Royal High Tea in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.

Actually, the Sheraton on the Park Sydney has created this special high tea menu to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II becoming the UK's longest reigning monarch. Now that's quite a feat - worthy of a good cuppa. My friend and I are popping by one rainy afternoon to hopefully get the royal experience.

As we enter the Gallery Tea Lounge on the ground floor, friendly staff escort us to our comfy armchairs by the window. We're excited enough at the prospect of sparkling wine arriving soon, but we then spot a certain politician and famous comedian sitting together a few tables away. This creates a further buzz and you can see everyone's baffled by this odd duo, wondering what they'd have in common. After some considered discussion we come to an obvious realisation: the politician's providing valuable comic material. Der! In any case, the interesting mix of guests creates a cosmopolitan atmosphere, not stuffy.

Soon the elaborate three tiered high tea cake stand arrives and we bring our attention back to the task at hand - EATING! But first there are some ground rules: 1. Take it slow and savour the experience 2. It's OK to quaff champers though. It's always puzzling to work out where to start when the stand arrives but we decide to be logical and work our way up from the bottom.

Delicious pastrami croissants, smoked salmon mini quiches and delicate cucumber sandwiches provide our savoury fix. Now we make our way up to the "top shelf". Here we find little lemon meringue tarts, red velvet cake, strawberry shortcakes, and oatmeal biscuits with chocolate ganache. Don't forget the strawberry jelly and meringue shot. All of this is washed down with a Vittoria coffee, and OK, another sparkling.

We end up staying over two hours chatting away and enjoying the relaxed vibe. The staff are kind enough not to rush us out and they're attentive but not intrusive. When we finally make a move, I think to give the staff a friendly "Queen's wave". But then I decide nah, that's silly. Instead they get a quick princess's wink.

Check out their website . $49 will get you the Royal High Tea, including a coffee or tea, and $59 for the Sparkling High Tea which includes a glass of sparkling. There's also a tempting sounding buffet option.
