High tea on board the Queenscliff ferry
High tea on the high sea

The concept of high tea has really taken off. Not sure why everyone has forgotten about their waistlines but they have. It must be because when you eat in gorgeous surrounds it somehow negates the sin of all those kilojoules.

One of the more unusual ways of having afternoon tea is on board the Queenscliff Sorrento Ferry.

Ferries have traditionally been synonymous with bad coffee that slops around in polystyrene cups.

But this afternoon tea will change your views.

The high tea is served in the section of the ferry known as the Portsea Lounge. And as we all know, anything named Portsea immediately means upmarket. So there are lovely white tablecloths and china cups. You can indulge in an afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, cakes, desserts served with freshly brewed tea or expresso coffee and/or sparkling wine during the 40 minute crossing.

Outside the windows you can watch the spectacular coastal scenery with its lighthouses, historic fortifications, cliff top mansions and marine life such as dolphins, seabirds and occasionally whales.

The package also represents excellent value. The normal return trip costs $20 plus you have to pay for your own slopped around coffee. The High Tea on the High Seas package is $35.00 per person and includes immediate return travel on the same ferry. Although if you wish to get out and have a walk around at the other end then you will need to buy a single fare back.

While this is certainly not a sensational high tea such as The Gables, the novelty factor and superb views make it well worth considering as a unique way to spend an afternoon.

Bookings are essential.

High Tea will be served on the following dates in 2013:

Departing Queenscliff @ 11am, 1pm, 3pm

March 31st, April 28th, May 26th, June 30th, July 28th, August 25th, September 29th, October 27th & November 24th.

Departing Sorrento @ 12pm, 2pm

April 14th, May 12th, June 16th, July 14th, August 11th, September 15th, October 13th & November 10th.
