Last Saturday my Mum and I wiled away a couple of hours at the Art and Design Precinct in West End. The gallery held this event in celebration of Mother's Day and the "Nurture" exhibition on display now. I was disappointed that the afternoon tea wasn't "high tea"as advertised. I'm afraid paper plates and store bought food don't constitute "high tea". Having said this, we did have a pleasant afternoon. Champagne, tea, coffee and a selection of sandwiches, biscuits and cakes for afternoon tea were all covered by your ticket. Live music, lucky door prizes and the opportunity to view the "Nurture" exhibition were also included.
For me the highlight of the afternoon was discovering an emerging Brisbane artist by the name of
Kirsten Bailey . The three paintings she is showing at the Gallery are themed around motherhood, making them perfect for this exhibit. In "Little Family", "Hope Within" and "Breakfast for Early Birds" Kirsten uses beautiful colors, silhouettes and one of her favourite objects - trees. Her paintings have a dreamy, calming effect and are a real treat for the eyes.
Whilst at the gallery you have the opportunity to purchase works by local artists. These items include art work, beautiful candles, jewellery, soaps and various other items. Most of these are reasonably priced and would make unique gifts.
The gallery's directors, Michelle Bowden and Grant Hiscock were both thrilled that this event was completely sold out and said: "The event went very well we thought. It was a lovely social afternoon." Michelle and Grant would like to thank Karen McLeod for her music performance which added to the gallery's ambience for this occasion. Their next event is planned for August and will be a fundraiser for the Red Cross. If you'd like to know about upcoming events at the Art and Design Precinct, you can contact the gallery and ask to be added to their email mailing list.
The "Nurture" exhibit will be on display until May 14th.
