Artists Create Hidden Sculpture In Historic Cemetery
Rookwood Cemetery is located at 1 Hawthorne Avenue, Rookwood and is open seven days a week. The original cemetery was established in 1867 and has operated since that day, making it one of the oldest working cemeteries in Australia. For anyone tracing their family history, cemeteries such as Rookwood provide a valuable source of information from the headstones.

The Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust (RGCRT) is situated on the land of the Dharug people, a people who are part of the oldest continuous culture of the world. Acknowledgement is given to the Dharug people as the traditional custodians of this land.

In 2012 Rookwood General Cemetery was established to unite the former Anglican, General, Independent, Jewish and Muslim Trusts that managed Rookwood. Through this amalgamation, the cemetery can now cater to most religious and cultural groups and do conduct fifteen different types of burials, meeting the needs of different groups within the community.

An outdoor Hidden Sculpture Exhibition is to be held at Rookwood Cemetery from 7th September to 6th October 2019. The event is free; however, you need to register as there are different times for different days.

The artists who produced this exhibition pondered on the notion of history, culture, remembrance and love to explore ideas and create sculptures so visitors could relate to the historic significance throughout Rookwood. Being Australia's largest cemetery, numerous families have trekked through the grounds and paid respect to their ancestors.

This is an exhibition that is truly worth your visit, if only for the amazing sculptures hidden within the grounds. For me, cemeteries give such peace and can educate the visitor on the nationalities that first settled in the area.

Looking into the future, the Rookwood General Cemetery has plans to cater to a wider audience by establishing genealogy hubs and upgrading their ceremonial venues.
