Enjoy oceans of fun with a jam-packed program of events

The Hervey Bay Ocean Festival returns this August with 9 fun-filled days of fabulous events and entertainment for all the family to enjoy! Start planning the ultimate Hervey Bay adventure today!

Kicking off on Friday 11th August 2017, the Hervey Bay Ocean Festival highlights the region's deep connection with the sea and coincides with the world famous whale-watching season between July and November! During this time, thousands of humpback whales travel the 'humpback highway' and arrive in the calm, protected waters of Hervey Bay to rest, socialise and play before continuing their trip back to the Antarctic for the summer months.

As part of the annual Hervey Bay Ocean Festival, visitors will be invited to take part in the famous 'Blessing of the Fleet', the mouthwatering 'Hervey Bay Seafood Festival', the spectacular 'Whale Parade and Concert' and the enlightening 'Paddle Out for Whales' event! Check out the full details below:

  • Blessing of the Fleet: In the FREE opening event on Saturday, 12 August 2017 at Great Sandy Straits Marina, the Fraser Coast's famous fleet of whale watch boats will be blessed in a centuries-old tradition to ensure a safe and prosperous season. Held from 4pm to 8pm, visitors can tour the many whale watch vessels, wander through market stalls and enjoy a sail past, fabulous fireworks and live entertainment! An abundance of food stalls, takeaway shops, restaurants and cafes will also be open throughout the evening.

  • Hervey Bay Seafood Festival: The following day, on Sunday 13th August 2017, visitors will be treated to a wonderful showcase of Fraser Coast's delectable seafood offerings! Hosted by the local industry who catch Hervey Bay's famous seafood, the event serves up a host of fresh and delicious wild-caught ocean produce, loads of entertainment, competitions, cooking and catching tips and much more at Fishermen's Park, Urangan Boat Harbour from 10am to 4pm. Unmissable highlights include cooking demonstrations from leading chefs, seafood and fish-smoking masterclasses, a prawn eating competition, sideshow alley and loads of freebies. Admission is just $5 and those under the age of 18 receive FREE entry!

  • Whale Parade and Concert: On Saturday, 19th August 2017, enjoy an enchanting spectacle of lights and floats representing the humpback's annual migration, followed by a fabulous FREE concert with leading Australian and local artists at Seafront Oval! Adding to the vibrant community atmosphere are exciting carnival rides, bustling market stalls and a diverse selection of food stalls. For the best view of the parade, pick your spot between Frank Street and Seafront Oval from 6pm.

  • Paddle Out for Whales: Held on Sunday, 20 August 2017 at Scarness Park, this FREE conservation and awareness based event is full of heart with visitors encouraged to jump aboard a paddleboard, kayak or boat to celebrate a love of whales in the whale-watching capital of the world.

If you don't want to 'paddle out', you can enjoy environmental speakers, races and live entertainment from 8am to 11am. Pre-register here or register your participation on the day to show your support.

This extraordinary nine-day festival will be a feast for all the senses and thrill and delight all ages!
