If you're anything like me, weekend outings include the family dog. In Hervey Bay that usually means the beach. Our dog loves nothing more than tearing along the sand flats at low tide, splashing in the leftover pools and rolling in seaweed. Without fail, this results in a happy and exhausted puppy. It's also an excellent opportunity for him to socialise in a neutral area.
Dog owners in Hervey Bay are spoilt for choice when to comes to dog friendly beaches. The foreshore between Shellcot Street and Ries Road in Toogoom is a 24 hour off-leash area and popular with locals and visitors alike. This is a terrific space for dogs that like to run but while there are taps and public garbage bins nearby come prepared with dog-waste bags and fresh drinking water.
Ace the Brittany is particularly enamoured with Toogoom Beach.
Closer to the town, the Point Vernon area is well catered for with two 24-hour off-leash areas. One right on The Esplanade near the boat-ramp and the other between Aplin Street and Pines Park. Again these lack the facilities of the park areas but provide much more space and opportunity for more strenuous exercise.
Urangan has one 24-hour off-leash area, between the Margaret Street groyne and the Churchill Street groyne. This is smaller area, close to cafes and shops. Just around the corner there is a timed off-leash area from the Urangan pier to the Aquarium. Between 3:00pm and 8:00am this area is off-leash but does get busy.
These are just a few of the more popular spots, visit Fraser Coast council's website to find one convenient to you, be aware that some are subject to limited hours (usually 3:00pm - 8:00am). When visiting these areas remember to always clean up after your dog and keep them under control: not everyone wants an over-excited, sopping wet and sandy puppy running through their picnic. It's also a good idea to ensure your dog is registered with council and its vaccinations are up to date.
