Herriotts Boulevard Wetland Reserve (Melway 71. A.7.) is a water bird lovers’ paradise, particularly for a built-up suburban.

The wetland consists of two small lakes surrounded by bush. There is a sealed path circumnavigating the lakes with several spots to approach the water edge. One lake was almost covered in duckweed. In the other, a couple of gentlemen were trying their luck with fishing rods.

The most numerous waterbirds were dusky moorhens. The highlight of my walk was seeing several moorhen chicks swimming around closely watched by their mother.

Other dusky moorhens posed for individual photos.

There were many ducks on the lake, lake surrounds and on rocks. Black ducks were the most numerous breed. Some were sitting ducks for my Canon, camera.

Several wood ducks were onshore but took to wing on my approach. A bird expert informed me that they are referred to as maned ducks.

Several coots, identified by their white beak were swimming around and a swamphen was caught on land.

Many walkers were taking advantage of the good weather and the easy paths.

Two people and their dog approached and Bella, the golden retriever, posed for a photo. It is strictly an on-lead area. Bella was on a lead, but I photoshopped it out. Another dog was photographed, wandering around by itself, a rare sight these days.

An occasional bush had flowers. An Australian blackthorn and a purple forest nightshade flowers.

Several purple loosestrife plants were growing around the lakes giving a splash of colour. A pine tree was growing tall with low-hanging branches showing of its pine needles.

Several tall sedge plants were noticed.

Non-water birds seen were several noisy miners but aren’t they everywhere.

The lake path is part of the Scotchmans Creek Trail, and a sign gives directions to different destinations.

This small wetland area in suburbia is well worth a visit for its serenity and bird life.
