Heroes Yum Cha(r) Rooftop Barbecue

Tong heroes take over the rooftop to deliver bbq delights
Heroes Bar, in the heart of Melbourne, has one more of its popular Yum Cha(r) rooftop barbecues in autumn before packing it in for this season. Each month in February and March, Heroes has invited a guest chef to join head chef Alicia Cheong to cook up a char grilled feast.

I attended the March Yum Cha(r) to check it out. Running from 1 - 3pm, it's a relaxed, friendly event. Alicia Cheong, whom I first met not long after the opening of Heroes was warm and welcoming, wandering around the tables and chatting to patrons when she wasn't wielding the barbecue tongs.

The rooftop is a long, fairly narrow space, partly under cover. The bar occupies one end of the space, the barbecue area the other, with tables placed in between.

$45 gets you a choice of two barbecue dishes, yum cha sides and two hours of drinks from the bar (limited selection). My partner and I selected one of each of the four barbecue dishes on offer - two from Heroes and two from the guest chef for the month, Elliott Moss of Buxton Hall BBQ in North Carolina, USA, to sample the full range.

What we got were four delicious, generous and diverse dishes - sambal squid, grilled smoky eggplant, spicy pina colada pork ribs and charred cabbage salad. In addition to these main dishes, the yum cha trolley was circulating with sides, such as dumplings, congee and a roti style bread. It was a tasty and satisfying meal.

I'm not going into as much detail about the food as I generally might in a restaurant review, and that is because next month, there will be a different guest chef - Rhys Hunter from Pontoon, St Kilda. That of course means the dishes may be completely different; however, you can again expect barbecue dishes with Asian flavours, along with a range of yum cha sides.

If you want to round out your Heroes experience, head downstairs to level 3 after lunch, where open mic karaoke will continue into the night.

Heroes is located at 188 Bourke Street, Melbourne. It's open Tuesday - Wednesday: 4pm-midnight, Thursday - Saturday: 4pm - 1am, Sunday: 4pm - midnight, (Monday: closed).
