This April, the National Trust Heritage Festival is themed Community Milestones. Marrickville Council through the Library & History Services is hosting a number of great community events.

Community Milestones of Marrickville Exhibition
This photographic exhibition runs from 16 April - 3rd May at the Marrickville Library. It shows the many changes in the area since it began as a rural settlement in the 1790's. Covering changes in transport and the rise of suburbanisation, as well as the multicultural evolution that had influence at times on the architecture.

Tempe House
There is a lecture on the historic home, Tempe House and St Magdalene's Chapel by historian Ross Berry on Monday 29 April at 6pm in Marrickville Library. Tempe House is a stately home built in the colonial era (1835-36), designed by architect John Verge for the merchant Alexander Brodie Spark. Learn of the interesting period features, like the iron shutters to keep bushrangers at bay and the award winning exotic garden design.

Tour of Historic St Peters Church
No better way to see history than to be there. On Wednesday 24 April at 11am (finishing 12.30), head over to St Peters Church at 187 Princes Highway in St Peters. This church is the oldest building in the Marrickville Municipality, and gave the name to the suburb. In its 175th anniversary year, come and listen to the history of the chuch, its beautiful stained glass windows and the secrets of the adjoining graveyard.[BREAK]

In other history related events, The Family History Group will be looking at UK Records in their April session at Marrickville Library on Tuesday April 16 at 10am - 12pm.

Out of the Vaults will be looking at Marrickville-centric items, including a 1920's photo album of the Marrickville Hospital, postcards from World War 1 from the collection of Walter Werner and placards from the Stop the Airport Noise Campaigns. Head to Marrickville Library on Tuesday 8 April at 11am for an hour of interesting artefacts.

Have you noticed that I've made no mention of the cost of all these events? You can enjoy these intriguing and informative Heritage Festival events for free. That's historic itself!
