Disgusting books are sometimes just the thing to get the attention of a reluctant reader, and the most disgusting books around are books about poo. Here Comes The Poo Bus by Andy Stanton, author of the popular Mr Gum series, is a great example. It's full of spiders, flies, worms, maggots, cane toads and other creepy crawlies and, of course, poo.

Uncle Toad is driving the Poo Bus from the city to the seaside and urges all the bugs he passes to jump on board and come with him for a special treat. On arrival at the seaside it turns out the treat is not for the bugs but for Uncle Toad, who proceeds to eat them all before driving back into town, continuing to urge bugs to jump on board.

This book received my preschooler's seal of approval but speaking for myself I found I felt mysteriously itchy while reading it. I think it's all the bugs.

Recommended for kids aged 3 and up who are fans of creepy crawly icky things.
