Her Majesty Queen Adelaide Statue
Located within the International Rose Garden, a new statue of Her Majesty Queen Adelaide stands to celebrate her and her not-so-prominent past. She was the beloved queen of King William IV. As you might have guessed, the City of Adelaide is named after her.
Born in Germany in 1792, Adelaide was 25 years old when she married William who was more than twice her age. They had a loving union despite the difference in age and the presence of children from a previous relationship. Her Majesty was deeply religious, politically conservative and passionate about education for all. She gave generously to supporting charities close to her heart. Famously frugal, she requested a small, simple and inexpensive funeral upon her death.
The statue, with a rose in hand, was sculpted by Scott Eames in 2022. He based his artwork on portraits of the queen and a look-alike model. The rose she's holding is a hybrid tea rose also named in her honour. For more information, head to www.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au
