Perfect for the romantic weekend escape
The central location appealed to us. The combination of a B&B and a café was also an attraction. Being a former butcher's shop from the 1860's piqued the interest even more. Off to Moonta we went to see what Henry on George was all about.
Henry on George is a café located on the corner of Henry and George Streets in Moonta directly opposite the Town Hall. Formerly Roach & Sons Butchers, the building has been converted in to a busting café at the front, with a cute and quaint bed and breakfast on the rear / side.
Entrance to the B&B is from an almost hidden door on Henry Street, ensuring some privacy from main street window shoppers and passers by. The B&B comprises three rooms and a bathroom, and has sleeping facilities for five people, yet is probably more ideally suited to a couple looking for that weekend escape.
The main living area comprises a fully equipped open kitchen and a lounge area with TV / DVD, magazines, games and numerous artefacts to keep us amused for hours. The large fridge was useful for our drinks on the warm days, while the microwave helped warm the hot chocolate at night. Staples were provided, and there was plenty of crockery and cutlery to ensure that you weren't spending your whole holiday doing dishes.
The main bedroom contained a queen sized bed with a wonderfully soft mattress, and enough blankets and quilts to keep any potential cold outside. A wardrobe and a couple of storage shelves were plenty enough to keep all the clothes in place.
The smaller bedroom contained a set of bunk beds with a trundle bed underneath, which would accommodate three more visitors if needed. That being said the whole B&B better suited a couple looking for a getaway rather than a family stay, as the amount of room for kids to play inside and out was limited.
One of the unique features of the Henry on George B&B is your breakfast. Two choices exist - either pre-order from the Henry on George Café and have a cooked breakfast delivered to you in the morning, or else get yourself out of bed and walk next door to the Café, and have the pick of the house each morning.
Sitting on the sidewalk watching the world go by is one of my hobbies, so up we woke each morning to go to the Café. Henry's advertises that it has the best coffee in Moonta. I must admit that I didn't try the coffee at all the other locations in Moonta, but I felt little reason to do this as the coffee provided each morning was as good as many of the coffee houses in Adelaide.
Over the few mornings we were there, we tried a few different varieties of eggs in our breakfasts from the standard eggs on toast, to bacon and eggs, and several different types of Eggs Benedict. Despite tyring weather conditions, the chef was good enough to create near runny eggs on every occasion, just as I like them.
Henry on George Café is open from 9am to 5pm daily, while the Bed and Breakfast is available for bookings all year round. Further details are available from the Henry on George facebook page. If you are looking for that perfect romantic escape, yet still being in the centre of town, Henry on George could be exactly what you are looking for.
Great review and the photos make me want to go there for a weekend. Unfortunately I'm reading this article at work where I cannot access Facebook so a link to their website (assuming they have one other than Facebook) would have been handy and/or prices for the B&B accom.
