In today's world where toys are made for the masses most commonly out of plastic, it is still refreshing to chance upon an olde worldy toy shop where each visit you wish you could buy so much more than you are able to. A shop where you think Santa would send his elves to shop if they weren't so busy making their own toys. I imagine that if Willy Wonka had stepped outside his chocolate world, he might have created a toy shop not so dissimilar to Henry Hiccups.
The clever slogan chosen by Henry Hiccups simplistically describes its main staple offering 'toys your child will love and cherish' indicating that this is perhaps not the place to purchase your cheap and nasty 'use them for a month till they break' toys. Instead come prepared to buy toys that could easily last for a whole childhood, and in some cases, toys that you'd want to hang on to for the grand kids. Bear this in mind when you consider the price tag; consider the materials that have been used; the craftmanship and the impeccable quality. Prices are a little steep; but I've got to refer to the age old adage that you get what you pay for.
What's On Offer In trying to do justice to what is on offer in this fantasy land, perhaps it would be simpler for me to say what's not on offer, but I'll indulge you somewhat and describe that this is an Aladdin's Cave of a toy store. You'll find toys here from yesteryear, rainbow coloured wooden toys, imaginative toys, spinning tops, musical instruments, dress up outfits, rocking horses, sit on, push and pull along toys, jack in the boxes, windmills, arts and crafts, pretty dolls, wooden cars and vehicles, dinosaurs, go karts, gum boots, books, puzzles, mobiles and so so much more. If you're sent out to buy a gift for a child, come here and you'll have enough to choose from in addition to the knowledge that your gift will likely not be replicated, and you'll have given a gift that the child can treasure forever.
Don't come here expecting to see the standard toy brand names of plastic toy giants akin to Fisher Price, leave those toys for the bright lights of Toys r Us. These toys have their place, but you'll not find them here.
What Else Not only does this store offer an array of beautiful toys, it also houses some really charming and knowledgeable staff. They remember its visitors, even down to on our last visit, they remembered what we'd bought the time before, and were delighted when we described how wonderful we'd found our purchase. Fantastic, friendly customer service with free gift wrapping on offer too.
In addition to its store, Henry Hiccups were also a popular attraction at the Christmas markets in Subiaco, a firm favourite amongst the 0-10 age range demographic of market goers.
Situated on busy Oxford Street in Leederville, head to Henry Hiccups to support an independant retailer who are creating a little bit of magic in this popular shopping suburb.
If you are taking your little ones with you, be aware that this is possibly not the most pram friendly of spaces; there is some novel pram parking out the front and staff will try and assist you as best they can.
Their website is currently in progress, so in the meantime you can check out its Facebook page.
Thanks for your comment. I visited the new premises in Leederville last week, so will be updating the review shortly. There's lots of new stock in the Leederville shop although all favourite lines are still there. thanks
