Go Greek this summer with all things Greek at the
Henley Beach Square Greek Festival , Henley Beach Road, SA. All you need is food and entertainment to party and there'll be plenty of that with live music and Greek dancing keeping the traditions alive. All it needs is you, so come on down and enjoy homemade delicacies, traditional Greek food including the more familiar yiros, souvlaki and more on
Sunday 12 January 2020 from 11am to 6pm.
This event is even more special as it incorporates the most significant religious event on the Greek Orthodox Calendar, the
Blessing of the Waters. The contrast between traditionally clad holy men and scantily clad swimmers is a common sight in the race to rescue the holy cross thrown into the waters by the priest. It is believed whomever retrieves the cross from the waters in this traditional race, will have luck bestowed upon her or him, and everyone is keen. On a religious level, this ritual commemorates and celebrates the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan.
It is also known as the Feast of Theofania because it is when the Most Holy Trinity is revealed to the world through the Baptism of the Lord. If you enjoy traditional Greek food, music, dance and festivals, head to this free event for an afternoon of family fun. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to watch as keen swimmers dive for the cross.
