Each year the Helpmann Academy showcases a selection of graduate visual artists. It is an opportunity to seek out the emerging new artists and be immersed in fresh art forms. The exhibition is on show at the Drill Hall at Torrens Parade Ground, Adelaide until March 6th.

Emerging Artists
The exhibition highlights the work of emerging artists. The art media used includes ceramics, glass, jewellery, painting, sculpture and photography. There is a catalogue available for a donation (minimum $2).

On Screen
Featured works include the multiple video screens of Michael Schaffer. These are performance works on video in which the viewer is only privy to the socks and feet of a person seen jumping. It is repetitive and seems to question endurance. Endless jumping can do that! Artist Tara O' Conal highlights an old pull down blind in an untitled work which draws the viewer towards it. A window out?

Ashley Lithgow has a deceptively simple array of lino cuts entitled 'Guilty Food Pleasures'. With a focus on the dilemma of excess food and a healthy lifestyle. Food features heavily for Emma Young with a series of pieces of iconic south Australian foods, i.e. Frog Cakes, Fruchocs and the pie floater.

On entering this exhibition the visitor is assailed by the sounds of a mechanical grinding noise. This is disturbing for some as it seems to take up the brain space of the viewer. It forms part of an intricate installation by Edwina Cooper entitled The Weather Works. It could be a set of weather interpretation data taking tools, but it is also strangely and weirdly hypnotic.

There are many more pieces I could feature in this review, but the viewer is now invited to go and explore for yourself. This annual display of modern art by emerging artists has free entry and works are for sale, with many already being snapped up. But be quick as the exhibition finishes this Sunday, March 6th.
