Say hello to this family favourite at The Q
By now I'm confident that my readers know how much I enjoy a good musical production. I'm constantly surprised by the quality and breadth of the shows put on by our local outfits, shows which have become favourite fixtures in my calendar.
What readers may not know, and what I myself have just discovered, is that I now appear to be quite the influencer. In this 2016 article I managed to reference my top four Hollywood musicals in a single paragraph. That's Holiday Inn,Calamity Jane, High Society and Hello, Dolly! The first one is a Christmas movie, so let's ignore it for today. Let's also turn a blind eye to Bing and Frank's Long Island caper. But the other two? Calamity stopped by the Canberra Theatre last year as part of a fantastic national tour. And, in incredibly exciting news, The Queanbeyan Players will bring Hello, Dolly! alive on stage this May.
You may call this simply coincidence. I call it fate.
Queanbeyan Players' May 2019 production of Hello, Dolly!
The movie version of this classic celebrates its 50th anniversary this year but the musical appeared on Broadway first. It follows the movements of Dolly, a sassy, enterprising widow in 1890s New York, as she pairs up a cast of characters whether they like it or not. It's fun for the whole family and the musical numbers incredibly strong.
I've talked up The Queanbeyan Players and the fantastic space which is The Q before. You see, it's the same mob who put on The Wedding Singer last year and Guys and Dolls the year before (which, truly, would round out my Top 5). I am very confident that Dolly is in good hands with them.
Hello, Dolly! opens on 31 May 2019 at 8 pm and runs until 9 June. There are 2 pm matinees on the weekends of 1-2 and 8-9 June. Adult tickets are $50 each; children are $25. Discounts are available for concessions, groups of six or more and under 25s.
