Listen to this local artist You are sure to love her
One of my current university assignments requires us to make a music video. So, on the hunt for a local artist I go. A friend of a friend suggested that I try a friend of his from his university days. This is how I found out about Helen Shanahan. How could I have missed this musical gem?

Helen Shanahan
The stunning and talented Helen Shanahan

With Helen's genre being Folk/Indie, Her influences are artists like Joni Mitchell, Missy Higgins and Michelle Branch. I of course fell in love with her music instantly. Her beautiful voice is great to listen to while relaxing one afternoon.

I contacted Helen to see if she would mind if I made a music video using her song for my assignment. I was over the moon when she said yes. Putting faith in a student is a big thing. It was her song 'Driftwood', from her album of the same name, which I fell for the most. This song, released in 2012, has won the 'folk' category in the SongoftheYear.com competition of 2012. Showing I am not the only one to think that her music is magical.

Now I am very much recommending that you get a hold of her album 'Driftwood'. It is filled with songs that take you on a journey through love and life. And if you are a fan of folk/acoustic music, like me, then you will most likely fall in love with her music in just the same way that I have. You can listen to her music for free on her website or purchase the album from ITunes (currently for $13.59). Personally I believe if you like her music than you should help support local artists such as Helen by purchasing her album rather than download it for free. After all, it's less than the price of a movie ticket, or three cups of coffee. You actually get to keep this item forever and feel good that you are helping to support the music industry.

If you are a lover of live performances you can see Helen at 'Zanders: Torch Bar' in Scarborough every Friday night (that is after she returns from her holidays), and she is also available to be booked to perform at events such as Weddings, Festivals, Fetes and Birthdays.

So why not check this artist out. You may just find yourself discovering your new favourite musician.

Now I only hope my music video for university does her song justice.
