MOD. HEDONISM. Exhibition

MOD Museum is a new venue in North Terrace that is breaking the mould in creating exciting, new interactive exhibition spaces. Their ethos is to create a place to be inspired while showcasing all types of knowledge and ideas. Many questions are asked of the viewer throughout.

'Hedonism' is MOD museum's third exhibition which recently launched at the end of May. On arrival, the visitor will see a large foyer area that includes a cafe and shop. There are also a number of guides in colourful jackets who will alert the visitor to the six main 'gallery' spaces in the building. The exhibition is loosely connected to pleasurable experiences with the concept to provoke new ideas in the areas of science, art and innovation.

A space that looks out towards North Terrace features a plethora of plastic plants, the question asked among many is 'Can plastic plants be as therapeutic as real plants?'

Social media and social connection are examined as the visitor explores this experience in various booths. The topic of consent is also explored. This area as a video arcade feel.

Another gallery space asks questions about making exercise more fun and enjoyable, so more people might actually do it. The aim is to challenge the huge negative component to exercise that happens as people get older.

There are places to imagine what a healthy workplace would look like and another area devoted to nature pods. Indigenous languages are also shown on screens. There are lots of bright touch screens everywhere for people to get involved with.

The viewer is encouraged throughout to participate and not be a passive observer. Perhaps the scope is too large, which is where it would be wise to have a pit stop or coffee break. Visitors are advised to allow at least an hour to view the whole exhibition space. Some of the gallery spaces are on the first floor and others stretched out around the ground level.

This exhibition has fun with challenging assumptions and perspectives about what humans find pleasurable, and how to manipulate our senses into feeling good e.g. via a nature pod, plastic plant or visual kaleidoscope experiences.
