The first production of Hedda was in 1891 in Munich. Written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, it was regarded as classic realism of nineteenth-century theatre and drama. Hedda is considered to be one of the greatest dramatic roles in theatre.

There have been many versions of Hedda over the last century. Many famous actresses have played the part of Hedda in film and on stage. One of the most famous was Ingrid Bergman in the BBC television production of the play. Now a new production of Hedda will open at the Star of the Sea theatre Manly in October, presented by the Factory Space Theatre.

Hedda is the daughter of an aristocratic general. Her husband, George Tasman, is a young aspiring academic. Hedda was brought up by a strict father who never wanted any scandal in the family.

Hedda resented the strictness of her father and longed for a more daring lifestyle. When her father and mother both die, Hedda's true personality comes through. However when Eilert Luvborg, a writer who is a recovered alcoholic, gambler and womaniser reappears on the scene, the mood changes. Hedda and Eilert have had a strong relationship in the past which was not of an innocent nature,

%%The photo above shows the cast:
Maria Hemphill as Thea
Danny Bolt as George Tesman
Ella Arendelle as the singer
Chris Snell as Aunt Julia
Richard Holborn as Eilert Lovborg
Micky Rose as Hedda Tesman (née Gabler)
Ross Scott as Judge Brack%%

Eilert, now becomes a threat to George, Hedda's husband, as he has had great success with his writing of late. George and Eilert are both now competitors for the university professorship.
However, Eilert tells them he has no intention of competing for the professorship as he has been very successful as an author. Thea, his close friend, has helped Eilert diligently for the past two years.

Hedda's true nature starts to show as she becomes jealous of Thea's influence over Eilert. She knows of his drinking problem, however, she pushes him to join her husband to a party. Her motives are she is hoping it will start him drinking again. This may bring him back to his wilder side, then she would have her power over him again.

When George returns home from the party, he tells Hedda he has found Eilert's great manuscript. Eilert had lost it while drunk. The consequences of this are huge for them all.

In this modern production, Hedda, played by Micky Rose, is a dramatic role. The dark side of her manipulative personality shows through very early. I was impressed with the performance of Danny Bolt as George Tesman. His acting ability to take on different roles shone through. He had a natural ease in his performance and a flair for the character he was portraying.

Ross Scott as Judge Brack was excellent in his role. He plays a rather selfish manipulative man. He gives a strong performance and in an unexpected twist in the play, he is able to manipulate to his advantage the manipulative Hedda with dire consequences.

The play will run for approximately two weeks.

This new version by Emma Willis Is directed by Roz Riley.
