Walk across the bridge and see Goolwa from a different view
Hectors Cafe is located in the fantastic Goolwa Wharf Precinct, near the beautiful Hindmarsh Island Bridge and right next to the pelicans.

Hectors is open Monday -Thursday 9am-5pm and 9am till late on Friday and Saturday.

Sitting at Hectors, watching the pelicans, boats and people drift by is a delightful way to pass the time while drinking excellent coffee. But if you contemplate eating a delectable cake as well you'll need to go for a walk first!

So let's go!

On this 2.6km Food Walk you'll cross over the bridge to Hindmarsh Island and look back towards the mainland. It's nice to get a new perspective on places.

Next to the Goolwa Wharf is Signal Point Gallery. The gallery showcases works from local artists as well as other South Australian and national exhibitions. Go in and have a look if you have time, it's always worth a look.

Next to the Gallery building, you'll see a path. Start the walk by following this path.

Then you'll see directions to another path.

Follow this one too. And you'll come to the Hindmarsh Island Bridge. It's had it's fair share of controversy, but it's still a beautiful bridge.

There's a walking/bike path to the right side of the bridge, so it's perfectly safe to walk across.

There's a fabulous view back over to the Goolwa Wharf and Hectors (where there is usually at least one pelican standing guard).

Keep walking over the bridge and you'll reach the island. Just a short distance ahead, on the right, you'll see an Information Bay where you can read a bit of history about the area and jot down some phone numbers for local services (you might want to hire a kayak and go for a paddle on the river!).

Just behind the Information Bay is a short, bush walking circuit.

This area has been planted and is maintained by the Hindmarsh Island Landcare group. They have a nursery close by, where you can buy native grasses and other local plants on Tuesdays.

If you follow the bush path to the top of the hill, you will come to a lookout platform.

Normally you could stand on the platform and get another great view of the mainland. Sadly the platform has recently been burnt, perhaps vandalised, and is therefore inaccessible. Hopefully Alexandrina Council are onto it.

So head back along the bush path, back over the bridge and towards your ultimate reward.

Hectors Cafe welcomes you

Hectors serves scrumptious breakfasts until midday, everyday. Luscious lunches are available until 3pm and there is a choice of specials each day.

I do love pelicans. I also enjoyed your tour of the island. I would like to tour the island and come back and dine at Hectors.

Going to Goolwa soon Karen, so will go on this short walk. Thanks for the idea - it's perfect for after dinner on a summer evening.
