Despite its spectacular landscape and laid-back way of life, Western Australia presents various challenges to those of us who desire to put down our roots and call it home. Our long scorching-hot summers can test the sanity of even the most laid-back amongst us while home gardeners frequently grumble about the sandy infertile soils that we're plagued with. Fortunately help is at hand, and here in Perth we're lucky to have a few dedicated eco-gurus who know our local environment intimately, and are ready and willing to share their expertise with the wider community.

Established by several of Western Australia's most well-respected leaders in environmental sustainability, The Forever Project is the organisation responsible for some of the state's most highly-acclaimed community environmental programs. Throughout the Perth metro area as well as many regional centres, its Great Gardens presentations have educated and entertained thousands of locals for over ten years, while other programs, including those specifically for children, have increased the environmental awareness of many others.

Another popular program, now in its twentieth year, is Heavenly Hectares, a free workshop that presents information about sustainable property management practices to Western Australian landowners. Since it first began, it's been held in all regions of the state, from the far south to the tropical north, reaching an astounding 13000 people.

On Thursday the 31st October, from 6.30pm until 9.30pm, a Heavenly Hectares presentation will be held at the Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Resource Centre in Mundijong. Hosted by popular presenter Chris Ferreira, it will cover many topics relevant to local landowners including soil types, soil improvement, pasture and fodder species, pests, wind-breaking, fire-proofing, and drought-proofing the landscape. If you're hungry, a light supper will also be provided. Although this workshop is totally free to attend, it's strongly recommended that you register for it on The Forever Project website as this helps the caterers estimate how much food to provide.

In a nutshell, this event will be absolutely awesome and anyone living in the Serpentine-Jarrahdale area with an interest in sustainable landcare and eco-friendly living is strongly recommended to attend.
