Burringbar is a small town south-east of Murwillumbah in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. The name "Burringbar" is Aboriginal meaning "place of the Burring"; a Burring or Burrong is a non-returning fighting boomerang. Today, the Aboriginal people of the area identify with " Bundjalung " meaning from North East NSW and " Yugambeh people (South East Queensland).

Due to the distance from suitable watercourse transport, Burringbar was first settled in 1886 and one of the last early settlements to be established. From history records, the land was purchased by John Ewing in an area, where the current Burringbar Village is situated. Burringbar is located on the road that is now known as the Tweed Valley Way. Turning into the main street, I found a quaint town with its own post office, convenience store, park, butcher and Burringbar Collectables - Heath's Old Wares .

Owners of Heath's Old Wares, Eva and Ross Heath, are very familiar with the Northern Rivers Region, having owned similar stores in Ballina for thirteen years, Bangalow for eight years and now in Burringbar for the past three. Owning the freehold of their massive shed in Burringbar has enabled them to accommodate a mammoth amount of stock from many eras past. In fact, just one walk around the aisles is not enough, as you need to look both up and down as items are stacked and hung from the top shelves right through to the bottom shelves near the concrete floor. To try to elaborate on the items in-store would be impossible, however, I can certainly tell you some of the items that caught my eye.

On walking up to the front door, I was greeted by several cane baskets and metal washing bins and at the entrance, I was drawn in by more sturdy cane picnic baskets, grocery baskets ... any kind of basket you can think of, hanging from hooks on one of the high shelves. If anyone has even worked on a dairy or come across old wares from a farm, you will surely have seen metal milk containers of which Heath's Old Wares have plenty. I was pleasantly surprised to see sisters and brothers of my old metal watering can sitting on the shelves. If you think these items are not worth a quid, think again! Hold onto precious old wares from yesterday.

Today is a throw-away society, where we purchase tools and within a few weeks, they are useless and bin bound. Do yourself a favour, purchase older style items,; they may not look flashy but they are solid, strong for any job you require and made to last – that's why they are still here.

Growing up, I can always remember my Mum hanging the towels out with wooden " dolly" pegs ; she still has some in her peg basket today. As we now realise that plastic is not good for the environment, we can think back to those tough wooden pegs and wonder where are they today? Health's Old Wares can sell you these too at $2.00 a peg and I came home with a few.

Other items at Heath's are hardwood planks, hessian bags, chairs, tables, cane tables, wire baskets, collectable matchbox cars, magazines, bone-handled knives, cutlery, bottles, hinges, horseshoes, gate locks, nails screws, lampshades, brass horns, signs, tools, pulleys, Singer Sewing Machine drawers, nuts, bolts, drill bits, wheels, wooden ladders of all sizes, old collectable tins, marbles (only 50c each), rolling pins, chains, crockery, lace, walking sticks, old wooden tennis rackets, saws, original glass fishing floats, wheelbarrows, planter stands, anything you can think of and if you are a collector or interested in seeing an amazing collection from the past, Heath's Old Wares is definitely the place for you to visit.

Burringbar Collectables, Health's Old Wares can be found at 19-21 Broadway, Burringbar. They are open seven days a week from 9.00am to 5.00pm and can be contacted at 0415 389 803 or 02 6677 1181. Their website can give you more information on their history and where they have come from to the present day.

My visit was very enjoyable and I came home with a few pieces of antiquity to decorate my rustic back garden and with the knowledge of where I can purchase some more. So, if you are looking for a day trip away from the city, make your way down to Burringbar for a step back in time at Heath's Old Wares.
