Hello! I'm in heaven – lucky enough to be in the one place where 45 regional wine producers have come together to showcase their wares, predominantly, because we're at Heathcote in Central Victoria, some amazing Shiraz but a number of other varieties as well from around this award-winning wine producing region.

Actually I'm not there yet but I certainly will be when the kicks off over the weekend of October 4th & 5th.

Among the 45 wineries listed to attend Heathcote this year there are the usual stand-out names such as Tyrell's, Heathcote Estate and Hanging Rock but for me the attraction to this type of event is seeing what the other lesser known and usually much smaller producers have to offer.

I've never heard of Tar & Roses, The Bridge or Galli Estate but I'll certainly track them down at this event particularly after learning that Galli for example took a Gold Medal with their Camelback Heathcote Shiraz and trophies for 'Best Wine of Show', 'Best Table Wine – Red' and 'Best Shiraz' at the Victorian Wines Show back in 2012.

All in all there'll be around 200 Heathcote wines available for free tastings and for sale by the glass or bottle. (Makes mental note – driver required!)

There'll be a Masterclass with Nick Stock, one of the country's most respected wine commentators and tasting seminars with Rob Hicks.

But wine is only half of the Heathcote experience, the other is a sensational range of delicious food on offer courtesy of such producers as Kyneton Olive Oil, the Flying Calamari Brothers, Warialda Belted Galloway Beef, Mandi's Kitchen Gourmet Puddings, Goldfields Farmhouse Cheese and Timboon Ice Cream to name just a very few. (Makes another mental note – pack 'fat clothes').

Blow me down! If the Heathcote Wine & Food Festival is not THE Victorian taste sensation of 2014 I don't know what will be.

Come the weekend of October 4th and 5th get yourself along to this iconic Australian wine producing region where vines were planted as early as the 1850's and which today boasts more than 70 vineyards and 25 wineries renowned for some of the country's best Shiraz plus lesser known varieties such as Petit Verdot, Tempranillo and Viognier.

A bus service will operate from Melbourne's Southern Cross Railway Station departing at 9.30 AM Saturday & Sunday, leaving Heathcote at 5.30 PM to arrive back at Southern Cross at 7 PM. Fare $35 return.

A bus will also operate between Bendigo & Heathcote departing Bendigo Railway Station at 9.30 AM, Bendigo Visitor Information Centre at 9.45 AM and Axedale Primary School at 10.15 AM. The return trip departs Heathcote at 5.30 PM arriving Bendigo at 6.30 PM. Fare $26 return.

Tickets for both bus services need to be purchased on-line.

Just 119 Kilometres north of Melbourne or a 90 minute drive via Lancefield, Tooberac and the Northern Highway the trip to the 2014 Heathcote Wine & Food Festival will be well worth the effort.
