Hearts Ablaze is a play which was written by local writer Janis Bailey to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Judith Wright. This original play is based on the Tamborine letters between Judith and her partner Jack McKinney. It tells the story of the romance between famous local poet Judith Wright and her partner, philosopher Jack McKinney.



It is performed by the Tamborine Mountain Little Theatre Group, directed by Warrick Bailey.

I saw it last year when a friend of mine was a part of the performance. I went along with no expectations and no particular liking for, or familiarity with, Wright's poetry.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this local production was excellent. Not only was it in an interesting format, it was very well performed. As well as the enactment of the story of Judith and Jack, we see the spirit of Judith Wright sitting at the side watching and commenting on the proceedings. Also the action is interspersed with recitations of a selection of Wright's poetry throughout the show.

It was really marvellous evening. If you are Judith Wright fan don't miss it. and even if you are not, it is definitely worth attending. This poignant story is for everyone who likes a love story or has an interest in local history or wants a glimpse into the lives of one of Australia's most fascinating couples.



Held in the Zamia Hall at North Tamborine, you might like to stay overnight and enjoy the many delights of Tamborine the next day. There are lots of lovely places to stay - from fancy motels to B and Bs. Multiple dining venues can be found close to the theatre. I've eaten at Clancy's Irish Bar and Spice of Life , both of which served fabulous food. There are many other places to choose from.
