Some health stores have a holier-than-thou atmosphere about them, generating guilt in anyone who steps through the door and leaving them wishing they hadn't had that last latte, croissant, cigarette, slice of bacon, beer.
Healthtopia at Kenmore isn't one of those stores. Situated facing Moggill Road, Healthtopia is an oasis of calm amid the hustle and bustle. Proprietors deliver their holistic support free of judgement - helping customers achieve their own health goals rather than getting all preachy on them.
Healthtopia signals its relaxed attitude with an in-house cafe selling Di Bella coffee and a large selection of teas. Di Bella'sFelici beans (derived from the Italian word for 'happy') feature rich chocolate aromas and flavours and promise, in the words of the proprietors, to 'put a smile on your face'.
Other products available include all the sorts of things you'd expect from a health food store - including herbal, nutritional and homeopathic supplements, protein and exercise products, fresh natural produce, natural cosmetics and a great range of gluten-free foods such as cereals and flours, plus prepared foods like pies.
Dried fruits, nuts, seeds, flours, salt and grains including rice, oats, barley and buckwheat, are sold by the brown bagful. Healthtopia image.
Healthtopia also stocks the Bounce Balls which I have loved from the moment I first discovered them at Our Heavenly Espresso Bar. They also have supplies of the divine Abode range of cleaning products which leave your home scented with lavender, mint, lemongrass, ginger and rosemary rather than bleach and other chemical nasties. (This, it must be said, is about the most excited I can get about the prospect of house cleaning.)
Staff working within Healthtopia are natural health professionals with differing areas of expertise. They can answer most questions - or refer on people who present with more complex or demanding health issues.
Unable to get into the store? Healthtopia staff can take your order over the phone and send items by mail the same day. If you live in the area, they're sometimes even able to hand-deliver purchases. They're also willing to attempt to source any items not usually held in stock.
Keep one eye on the calendar, too, for on the last Saturday of each month, there's a Smiley Day, offering discounts of up to 20 per cent store wide.
