Richmond Wellbeing , a not-for-profit organisation, is presenting the Western Australian premiere of Healing Voices directed by award-winning filmmaker PJ Moynihan.This special community screening at Richmond Wellbeing Centre, 29 Manning Road, Cannington, is part of a world-wide release on Friday 29th April 2016 and is being held in partnership with Consumers of Mental Health WA (CoMHWA), promoting awareness and creating action around the critical social issues of mental ill health.In Healing Voices writer/director PJ Moynihan explores the stigma of mental illness in wider society and depicts psychosis through the stories of real-life individuals working to overcome extreme mental illness.The film follows three subjects, Oryx, Jen and Dan over nearly five years, and features interviews with notable international experts including Robert Whitaker, Dr. Bruce Levine, Celia Brown, Will Hall, Dr Marius Romme.The documentary calls for society to change the conversation and consider the fact that people can and do recover from severe mental health challenges, and that alternative treatments are available which have proven to be effective, enabling people to live full, meaningful lives.Richmond Wellbeing acting CEO Adrian Munro said: "We want to share this film with the people on the ground; consumers, families, communities and health care providers."This film aligns with the Richmond Wellbeing ethos, helping people with mental health challenges to live a productive life. We hope through our involvement with this global screening, we can encourage dialogue for mental health survivors and their families and help to create better awareness for our services so that we can continue to help individuals recover and live a better life." Mr Munro said.The screening will commence at 7pm (doors open at 6.30pm) and the event will be followed by audience discussion facilitated by Richmond Wellbeing and CoMHWA around the content of the film, and mental health in Western Australia.The cost is $15 standard and $10.50 concession.
