Healing is a film that tells of the human spirit.

The image of an eagle soaring lifts the spirit; conversely the image of a hurt and defeated bird plunges the heart into a bleak place.

Healing tells the story of a low security prison and its inmates, interwoven with the stories of the prison staff and those who run a program at Healseville Sanctuary, in Victoria. The film is based on true events.

The film is still showing in lots of cinemas, so that says something about its calibre. It definitely pulls a big emotional punch with strong performances all round.

Such laconic Australian characters reside in a low security prison in Victoria. The viewer comes to know them, their individual quirks and failures, their struggles and secrets. So much of the landscape on display is familiar with panoramic views of the tough Australian exterior. But as with many of the characters in the film, they may have a tough exterior, but a heart full of vulnerability.

This is how Margaret Pomeranz describes the film.

Plus these words from The Australian's reviewer Evan Williams, "Watching it is an exhilarating experience."

This is the most accessible prison film of memory, certainly it's the one that aims for the emotional jugular and actually hits the target.

High praise indeed for one of the surprise standouts films of the year.

The real stars of the film are the raptors. The gloriously fierce eyes of the owls, falcons and eagles lock into the screen, captivating and imploring, eager and restoring.

Redemption is found.

This is film maker Criag Monahan's first film in sixteen years. This is a film worth seeking out, before it leaves the big screen. Seeking is a theme interwoven throughout, as the deepest human desires may be well hidden from view.

The film bridges these hidden places with its manifesto - all that you are seeking, is seeking you.

Find this film while you can.
