The Hayden Orpheum at 380 Military Rd, Mosman, also known as the Orpheum Picture Palace, has a unique cinematic culture all it's own. For instance how many cinemas still have a Wurlitzer organ ascending from below with its own organist? Coloured panels in the lighting to curves of satin and statuettes adorn this magnificent space. This is a place where some guests insist on dressing up while many are just as happy in jeans and a cosy jumper.

The cinema breathed its first breath on 3rd October 1935 and has been lovingly cared for ever since. At the age of 52 she received a (facelift) restoration in December 1987, paying particular attention to the Art Deco architecture and design. Housing six cinemas, now all fully licensed, you can really feel at home without having to spend on Gold Class style tickets. There are bars on two levels selling snacks, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. The upstairs bar is a great place to relax prior to indulging in the movie genre of your choice whilst leaving the stress of a hard day at the office far behind.

But there is more to this beautiful building than a superb place to enjoy block buster movies. There are specific Wurlitzer shows, as well as National Opera screenings, Mums and Bubs sessions and so much more for the whole family. Check out the special events here .

[ADVERT]My own personal experience with Hayden Orpheum has been over many years of movie viewing in comfort and style. I recall going to see As it is in Heaven three times during its record stay at any cinema and possibly the longest running movie to be shown nightly for over a year at Hayden Orpheum.

I've been to talks there, for instance Jessica Watson on her return from sailing around the world. This young lady blew me away because at 17 she had the wherewithal to speak to a packed house with confidence and what's more invited children to participate and ask questions - and they queued to do so. It was a very moving experience to see these tiny tots so inspired.

The Orpheum has special offers whereupon you can buy a book of 10 tickets at a discounted rate and of course there is always the vastly reduced Tuesday rates at $12 per person. The ticket staff, bar staff and cinema attendants are always pleasant, polite and professional.

In a time where you may think it is 'cheaper' to stay at home with a DVD, I'd say if you have not been you are truly missing out. The statues and décor will keep you very well occupied before the big screen appears behind traditional red velvet curtains.

The cinemas range in size, from huge, amphitheatre sized to smaller theatres that are about the average size of a commercial cinema. The sound quality is terrific. You can't hear the movie next door, thank goodness, as this was a disappointing discovery I've noted in a modern movie complex. Naturally a movie theatre such as the Hayden Orpheum has a carefully selected choice of world and art house movies for budding Margaret's and David's.

Movies are all about a visual feast for the eyes and the senses, and Hayden Orpheum provides all of this before and after the credits roll. So go ahead and treat yourself and the family. It's a wonderful place to visit during at any time for a pleasant evening or on a cold rainy weekend or on a romantic night out. I can't imagine there are too many cities in the world with such an iconic treasure. So we do need to treasure it to keep it.

I assure you that when you visit the Hayden Orpheum you will not be disappointed. There is ample parking behind the cinema in the car park, or along the streets which are usually three hour free spots. There is a plethora of cafes and restaurants from casual to fine dining for those who wish to incorporate dinner into a memorable night out.
