It's hard to believe that beautiful tranquil getaways are actually not that far from Sydney CBD. I was invited to a winter hideaway in the lower Blue Mountains of New South Wales only to be hesitant given the cold winters. The journey started with a very busy week and dealing with an empty milk bottle in the fridge, heavy traffic, and mounting emails. It was moments of reminding myself that Hawkesbury Heights was only a few sleeps away. Anxiously packing hiking gear, binoculars, and hiking boots made all feelings elevate.

I couldn't believe how easy it was to drive to the Blue Mountains, taking in the breathtaking scenery and local townships. Without road works ahead, I arrived at Hawkesbury Heights YHA just over an hour from the central heart of Sydney. If I had taken the train it would have been an even more relaxing arriving from Central Station to Springwood town in approximately 1.5hrs. Then a 15 minute Springwood taxi ride to the hostel.

Hawkesbury Heights YHA was breathtaking. Greeted by lush bush setting when heading down the private driveway towards the hostel. What impressed me was walking in and seeing this as more of a house than a hostel. Sleeping up to 12 guests with ample space and breathtaking views from each room. The large kitchen overlooks the open back area and the dining and lounge gives everyone ample space to sit back, play available board games or finish a good read.

The large open fire place in the communal area is ready to roar for those toasty marshmallows and eerie ghost stories. Every area has magnificent views and the place is completely eco-friendly and mindful of solar electricity.

I thoroughly recommend taking time out to experience peace and serenity, especially when Hawkesbury Heights YHA overlooks spectacular valley views and offers a ray of outdoor activities for all ages. I certainly look forward to taking my family and friends back, however I would suggest BYO DVDs and DVD players as this is purely a hostel sanctuary.

From this retreat away, I now just have to look at my desktop screensaver to always remind me to take time out and enjoy the beauty that we are surrounded with!
